House of Loreto

The House of Loreto nursing home is located at 2812 Harvard Avenue Northwest in Canton, Ohio 44709.

If you go to the House of Loreto website, it claims that the House of Loreto is a distinguished nursing home and senior care facility in Canton, Ohio, that is dedicated to serving senior citizens with compassion and dignity.

The website claims that the House of Loreto was voted the second best nursing home in Ohio. If you scroll down to the explanation of the asterisks, it clarifies that it was voted the second best nursing home in Ohio three years ago in 2022 in a nursing home family satisfaction survey conducted by the Ohio Department of Aging and Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center. Assuming that is true, apparently things have changed dramatically since then.

Widespread Failures are Concerning

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is seeking a court order to shut down the nursing home after state health inspectors found widespread care failures that they say place residents in real and present danger. Recently, Attorney General Dave Yost filed for a temporary restraining order and injunction in the Stark County Court of Common Pleas on behalf of the Ohio Department of Health to close the House of Loreto and to relocate residents to safer facilities.

In an inspection report dated January 2, 2026, the Ohio Health Department said that the nursing home failed to provide basic care, adequately monitor residents' medical conditions and properly manage medications. Inspectors determined that 12 of the home's 29 residents were at serious risk and that 6 residents had already suffered actual harm.

"These residents deserve safe, competent care," Yost said in a statement. "When families entrust a nursing home with the care of their parents or grandparents, they should never have to fear that their loved ones are being neglected or harmed. Failing at that basic duty is unacceptable."

According to a release from Yost's office, the House of Loreto submitted an inadequate plan of correction by a January 8 deadline and remains out of compliance with state law. The Ohio Department of Health said there are plenty of other nursing homes in the Canton area to relocate residents quickly and safely if the court approves the closure. Among the most serious findings cited by the inspectors were failures to properly track residents receiving blood thinning medication, unmonitored kidney conditions that led to hospitalizations, and poor wound care that resulted in infections that did not heal.

Inspectors also found medications being administered without proper documentation, inadequately controlled narcotics and a lack of essential backup medications. The report further noted the absence of an infection prevention specialist and inadequate safeguards to prevent residents with dementia from wandering away from the facility.

"This nursing home was so badly run and is so dangerous that the director (ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff) feels compelled to immediately seek court authorization to close the nursing home and to transfer the residents to other nursing homes." the Plaintiff wrote in their Motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction.

Inspectors also cited leadership and staffing problems. New owners took control of the House of Loreto in March of 2025, but failed to establish a governing board, according to the report. The facility was also found to be understaffed, further jeopardizing resident care.

Despite the fact that the Ohio Attorney General is seeking to close this facility, its website continues to promote it as an exceptional facility with multiple client testimonials. Its Facebook page has recent pictures showing the residents celebrating New Year's Eve and Santa Claus coming for Christmas.

This raises a really important issue. Often when people are confronted with the prospect of placing their loved one in a nursing home they find it difficult to find a competent nursing home.

One of the things that we always recommend is to go to Medicare.gov. Medicare.gov has a nursing home compare tool, which shows every nursing home in the State of Ohio. You can search by geographical area. Most people who call us looking for a nursing home to place their loved one in, are seeking a nursing home that is close to them so that they can visit their loved one often. You can sort the nursing homes by geographical area. You can sort the nursing homes by five-star rating. You can read about the five-star rating of the nursing home, both the overall five-star rating and the staffing five-star rating. You can see if the nursing home has any penalties against it.

Visit a Nursing Home in Canton Before Moving a Loved One In

However, even if a nursing home has a decent rating, you should still visit the nursing home before you consider putting your loved one in that nursing home. Make sure you tour the entire nursing home. Make sure that you look all over the nursing home. Tour the residents' rooms. Walk up and down the hallways. Visit at different times of the day.

Does the facility seem adequately staffed? Visit at mealtime. Are the residents getting help eating their lunch or their dinner? Also, as we have reported many times in the blogs on this website, make sure you ask the Administrator or the Director of Nursing specific questions about how they would care for your loved one. If your loved one has specific needs, what would they do to keep your loved one safe?

As indicated above, the House of Loreto, has serious issues with monitoring residents' medication. It has serious issues with inadequate safeguards to prevent residents with dementia from wandering away from the facility. We have blogged about elopement multiple times on this website. It is a very serious problem. If your loved one cannot leave the facility unattended safely, then the nursing home must have a specific plan of care for keeping your loved one safe.

The House of Loreto has a serious issue with understaffing, which jeopardizes resident care. As we have indicated many times, if you do not have sufficient staff, there is almost no way that you can properly care for your residents.

Given the very serious concerns with the care at this nursing home, we would strongly recommend that anyone who has a loved one at The House of Loreto immediately relocate them.

If someone you love has been neglected or abused in a nursing home, please call us at The Dickson Firm at 1-800-OHIO LAW as we would be happy to talk with you and help you in any way that we can.
